The caecum is the first part of the large intestine. Attached to the bottom of the caecum is a thin, blind end tube called the appendix. Inflammation of the latter is called appendicitis.

The caecum is inhabited by bacteria and microorganisms. These bacteria are useful and make vitamins which are needed by the body.
